About Janet
Janet has a life-long love of combining acting, great works of literature, and international travel. She attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, majoring in Interpretation of Literature in the School of Speech. This was an incredible opportunity to study with Frank Galati and other esteemed members of the NU faculty. She went on to become a classical music radio announcer at WNIB-FM in Chicago for five years.
A move back to Miami brought Janet in touch with Barbara Lowery and the theatre department at Miami-Dade College North. She took classes in scene study, voice, and improvisation, and was cast in shows at various theatre companies in South Florida. She escaped the hot Miami summers by taking classes at Yale and Vassar, and was lucky to study improvisation with the late Paul Walker (NYU) at Vassar's Powerhouse Theatre.
Only the lure of international travel could draw Janet away from the South Florida stage. When she landed a job writing a CD-ROM adventure game in Stockholm, Sweden, she was back on a stage – in Stockholm – within three weeks. She was initiated into the world of British "pantos" with the Stockholm Players. She acted, directed, and taught improv classes for the Players.
After three years in Europe, Janet returned stateside and became part of the Boston theatre scene, acting and directing for professional, non-Equity companies. She studied improvisation with Keith Johnstone, Margie Zohn, and Marjorie Burren.
Nothing could have enticed Janet to leave Boston…except a scholarship to get her MFA in Acting at the University of Central Florida. She has resided in Orlando since 2004, graduating in 2007 with her MFA. In 2008, she received a grant from United Arts of Central Florida to study Michael Chekhov technique and was honored as a William Inge Scholar at the 2008 Inge Festival. Currently, she teaches acting, theatre history, public speaking, and English as a Second Language in Orlando. She performs "The Belle of Amherst" around Florida. |
